The joy of a new office is getting to know the people you now share common space with for about 40 + hours a week. This is always an interesting mix of finding fun people and the people who are cut from the Christmas card list before they were ever on it.
The fun people this time around includes a guy that was on my LDC I Conference team from last August. It's nice to see a familiar face and to have something in common. Today we looked were looking up pictures of people wearing mullet wigs. It's good fun.
Another guy in my office has really come around and chit chatting is getting a bit easier with him. Super nice guy (older, like dad older), but I think he sometimes gets a little freaked out with talking to me because I am the first female in quite a while to work in them there parts. He is more worried about saying something to offend me. :P I think that's funny.
There are two people who are off my Christmas card list already. One of them sits directly behind me and who in conversation in a fairly nice guy. He knows my family that owns the orchard and is pleasant. However. He is a nail clipper. And I am not talking about the weekly nail clipper. I am talking about the OCD kind that is clipping their nails just about every day at work. It seriously makes me want to throw up.
The second guy is one I will refer to as the LOUD TALKER. This is the guy who has a commanding voice to begin with and is just a solid talker in general. But of course it doesn't stop there. No, of course it doesn't. This guy uses speaker phone for EVERYTHING! He called his wife the other day to walk her through how to check the battery power on a cell phone which the whole office got to listen in. I am sure she would be really proud to know that her husband shared the fact that she didn't know how to check that with the entire office. His latest gig is complaining about the help the managers are hiring and how big the fish are that he is catching. I could care less about both and it takes everything I have some days to not jump up onto of my desk and yell, "SHUT UP". I feel this would not make the best impression, but seriously, I mean it.
Of course the last wonderful thing in my new office is the fact that at about 4:15pm, the sun starts to come through the window in the office directly into my eyes which makes it impossible to look at my screen without some serious squinting. To combat this, I wear sunglasses at my desk. Do I look ridiculous? Absolutely! But it turns out the person sitting there before tried to get some blinds and was unsuccessful. I would go out and buy them myself and install them too if I didn't think I would get a number of grievances.
So hooray new office and all of it's quirks. I am looking forward to my vacation from these guys already. :P

Lending a Helping Hand
As part of the Operations Leadership Development Program, we are required to perform a variety of community service activities. While I was in Georgia, this proved to be more difficult than you would imagine. We first had to have an idea of what we wanted to do and take that to our Community Service person at Lockheed and get it approved. The only thing was, they weren't very quick about responding and shot down almost every one of our ideas. It was hard to rally the troops to keep trying to come up with ideas.
Now that I am in Syracuse, the rules have changed. This is just one of the many differences between the sites. In this case it's a good thing. Here we more or less pick what we want to do and then go do it. This was mind blowing! To be empowered to choose appropriate events and go do them. How about that?
Our first event was on Tuesday at the Rescue Mission. They look for volunteers to help out in their warehouse to sort their incoming goods and other tasks as needed. Five of us signed up for this event and ended up sorting hangers for 3 hours. This probably sounds like a silly task, but I have never seen so many hangers in my life. We probably sorted through about six 4 ft. cube boxes sorting pants hangers from shirt hangers and putting them into smaller boxes. This wasn't too difficult of a task, however, when you add about 5 pounds of dust sprinkled all over the hangers, then it gets interesting. I have never blown black snot out of my nose before, but hey, we all have our firsts. Next time, we are bringing face masks.
Our second event was helping park cars at the Red Cross Parking Lot for the New York State Fair. We were up and downtown by 8am to start our day with brisk weather and gray skies. First task, clean the parking lot. I am always amazed at the people who feel no responsibility for the trash they throw on the ground. All I can say is, thank god for the gloves they gave us. The next task involved eating delicious donuts. Yum! Then we were off to direct cars to their lovely parking spots. This is what I learned from a day of directing cars. When you are getting directed by some poor sucker for event parking who is waving a flag like a lunatic, they are doing it for the 95% of the population that can not nor will not follow directions. Who knew it would be so difficult to do! Five hours later, we had our picture taken and headed on out.
In both cases people were exceptionally pleased to have the free help. For me, it was rewarding to do some physical labor and see actual progress with a task. Compared to my current desk job, this was immensely more enjoyable. I am excited that we will be able to do a lot more of these kinds of events and make a difference in this community. :)

Wanted: Fabulous Smelling Stuff
While I was in Atlanta I went to a few of these fabulous things called Shecky's Girls Night Out. I have raved about all their free goodies and how wonderful they all are. One of their free goodies was some samples from Dove with their new go Fresh Body Mists, Deodorants, and Body Washes. The last two times I went I got the Grapefruit Lemongrass Energizing Scent and I really liked it. It's light and smells really nice.
Now that I am completely out of all the sample stuff, I am looking for it in the stores and I am just bamboozled. I have been looking for it for months now in places like Target and the grocery stores because I know I have seen them there before, but now they seem to be a distant memory. I have looked in both Georgia and now New York with no luck. This search is starting to make me nuts.
Tonight after being frustrated I decided to check the good old internet (specifically Amazon - what don't they sell?) and found they do carry the product. A 6 pack of 3 ounce bottles. ?! Ugh, if that's what I have to settle for fine, but I just wanted to find one bigger bottle at a place that I could pop in and grab it when I ran out.
It seems like all the scents I like disappear once I get attached to them. Victoria's Secret did away with their Halo scent which I was super happy with, but now I am left looking for alternatives and well, even the cheaper body mists I like seem to be elusive. Maybe the universe is trying to tell me to be happy with my stinky self. Of course, my retort is something along the lines of go jump in a lake.
Le sigh.... Quest onward!
*EDIT - I FOUND IT! HOORAY LOCAL TARGET!

More Adventures with Movers
So I have kind of skipped over how special my moving company was in this post, but they just keep outdoing themselves. I emailed them a week ago asking for some claim forms because we have enough stuff that's damaged that we want to make some claims. Well of course they didn't send them. So I called today and asked again. This is the email response I got:
"All paperwork has been received and your claim has been sent to our claims depart. you should hear from them with in the next 3 days. Please do not throw any items away until you have been told to by your adjuster"
This is very peculiar to me because I have not submitted anything to this lady of their claims department. Amazing how they must have already known what it was they broke. This must be where they make all the money and wow their customers after terrible service. Words really fail me here.

DMV Happenings
This week I am became an official NY State resident. I went to the DMV and changed over my title, registration (aren't they one in the same?) and my license. Of course any trip to the DMV has it's tale and this is no different.
I filled out my paperwork online and had absolutely every piece of identification humanly possible and anything they could ask for including the bill of sale from my car. I have been to 3 different DMV's and I would like to think I have this routine down. Apparently not.
I arrived with my arsenal of identification and insurance and proof I am a resident in NY. Apparently I did not have the "right proof of insurance" for the sassy lady at the front desk who copped and attitude with me. I stormed away some what deflated and called my insurance company who immediately faxed the proper paper work and I went to stand in the "New License Line".
I stood there got my picture taken, got the faxed insurance paper work and then went to sit until my number was called. That's always fun. It's like winning Bingo when you are called. So I sat for 30 minutes and then I was called up. It took another 30 minutes to get all the paperwork straightened out. It took extra long because some Idiot in GA stole ID equipment from a DMV and so they had to call and verify I had an authentic Georgia license. Fabulous.
The rest of the process wasn't too bad, however at no point in there did they actually ask for my proof of residency. I think the two people I went to thought the other had checked it. Whatever, I had it on me in case they were suspicious. Being a former NY resident had it's plusses. They just looked up some of my old information and was almost on the "in club" then. They didn't bother with half my title paperwork proof of taxes and that mess because my car had already been registered there before.
Anyway, I now have my official piece of paper from NY State that says that they will mail me a real license in 7-10 days. Yipee! Hooray Official Resideny Status!!
